In reply to your letter, number 46057/1916, dated
27th September 1916, I am commanded by the Army Council to
inform you that rations, quarters and also uniform will be granted free vide War office letter 20/Generel (A.G.1.) of 3rd September 1918.

It is not considered essential that all officers
and warrant officers should speak Chinese, but it is hoped
that a large number will be able to do so.
The employment of British Officers and Warrant
Officers is considered essential.
Assistant Interpretors are to be Chinese and
the number required is 67 exclusive of those required for
the general hospital.
The Council would be glad, in order to avoid
further enquiry, if Mr. Secretary Bonar Law might be moved to forward by cable to the Governor of Hong Kong the full information contained in the War Office letter above quoted.
